Prof. Raymond Onders, Remen Chair of Surgical innovation in Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, gives a Webinar about the use of a new device that has recently recieved Emergency Use approval by the FDA, TransAeris, to prevent Ventilator Induced Diaphragm Dysfunction in patients undergoing high-risk surgery.
When used postsurgically to stimulate diaphragm contraction and drive ventilation, TransAeris has the potential to prevent Ventilator induced diaphragm dysfunction (VIDD).
In clinical trials, 40) of the time the patient spends on ventilators in acute cases is to manage VIDD and to wean the patient. This can be prevented by simply stimulatiing the diaphragm muscle to contract.
